Lot Essay

The present vase is based on Shang or early Western Zhou dynasty prototypes. Archaism permeates the arts of China from the Song dynasty reaching its peak during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor.

A similar white jade gu can be seen illustrated in Zhongguo Yuqi Shangjian, Hong Kong, 1996, pl. 631. For a related green jade gu and a variation with flanges, see Jadeware (III) - The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 1995, pl. 130 and 131.
