AN UNUSAL BLUE AND WHITE CIRCULAR TRAY
KANGXI (1662-1722)
With short flaring sides and everted rim, boldly painted in shades of cobalt blue with a solitary figure sitting in a mountainous landscape beside a retreat, a second figure traversing a rocky crag in the distance, a narrow hatched band below the rim, the underside with a Chenghua six-character mark within a double circle
10¾ in. (27.3 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

A related tray of similar size and form is in the Dresden Museum, in the collection of Augustus the Strong, and is illustrated by Eva Ströber, La maladie de porcelaine ..., Berlin, 2001, no. 12, pp. 38 and 39; the Dresden example also bears the mark of the emperor Chenghua within a double circle, and depicts three figures in a landscape.
