Lot Essay

The composite screw gun-vessel Avon was built at Portsmouth, launched on 2nd October 1867 and completed in November 1869. Displacing 603 tons and measuring 155 feet in length with a 25 foot beam, she mounted four guns, including 1-7in. and 1-64pdr., and carried a crew of 80 officers and men. Designed for colonial policing, a role for which she and her sisters proved ideally suited, Avon gave twenty years of service until sold for breaking in 1890.
