Lot Essay

The wooden three-masted barque Vere, 308 tons, was built at Sunderland in 1833. Owned by Timperon of London, she began her career trading out of the Thames to Jamaica under Captain E. Roberts. Subsequently sold to Thompsons of London in 1839 and placed under the command of Captain A. Boyd, she continued in the Jamaica trade until the mid-1850s when her owners replaced her with a new vessel of the same name.

The work offered in this catalogue shows Vere in her first year of service and may have commemorated heavy weather encountered on her maiden voyage.
