The fully-rigged Austriana was built by Hilyard Bros. at Portland, New Brunswick (Canada) in 1875. Constructed of wood and registered at 1,554 tons gross (1,519 net), she measured 215 feet in length with a 39½ foot beam and was in Canadian ownership until 1891 when she was sold to A.S. Jacobsen. Re-registered in Flekkefjord, Norway, her career under Norwegian colours proved a short one when she was accidentally burned at Pensacola (Florida) on 8th December 1894 whilst loading a cargo of sawn timber.
