A legal complaint, recorded in an ornate italic colonial hand, in a frontier lawsuit. William Young "late of York County" had evidently defaulted on payment of £420 "lawfull money of Pennsylvania" to John Young and "still doth refuse to the Damage of the said John." The debtor is enjoined to appear in court "in Proper Person" to answer the charge. Smith endorses at the botttom "I am not informed Ja Smith Attny. Defd. by sp[ecial] War[ran]t."

Born in Ireland, Smith studied law in Philadelphia and until 1769 served as the only practicing lawyer in the growing town of York, Pennsylvania.
