LINCOLN, Abraham. Autograph signature ("A. Lincoln") as President, also signed by seven members of the cabinet, some noting their residences: Secretary of State WILLIAM H. SEWARD ("William H. Seward Auburn" [N.Y.]), Secretary of the Treasury SALMON P. CHASE ("S.P. Chase Cincinnati"), Secretary of War EDWIN M. STANTON ("Edwin M. Stanton Washington"), Secretary of the Navy GIDEON WELLES ("Gideon Welles"), Postmaster General MONTGOMERY BLAIR ("M. Blair of Maryland"), and Attorney General EDWIN BATES ("Edw Bates of Mo."). N.p. [Washington, D.C.], n.d. [1864?].
1 page (9 3/8 x 7 7/8 in.) on a sheet of good-quality bond paper. Matted and framed with seven original carte-de-visite portraits; that of Lincoln in the familiar standing pose (Ostendorf & Hamilton O-86), those of Bates, Chase, Blair and Stanton with backstamps of E. or E and H.T. Anthony.
SIGNED BY PRESIDENT LINCOLN AND HIS WAR CABINET
Occasionally, Lincoln and his cabinet members would sign specially printed sheets with decorative borders and printed heading "Autographs of the President and Cabinet 1864." It is conceivable but not certain that these were created for sale at one of the Union Sanitary Fairs. (One example was previously part of the Forbes Collection, sold at Christie's, 17 May 1996, lot 157, $11,500). Interestingly, the order of signatures seems to have been fixed; all examples known to us preserve this sequence. In the so-called "Sanitary Fair" examples none of the signers indicated their home state or residence. Evidently Secretary of the Interior John P. Usher was not present on the day this sheet was signed.
