TAFT, William H. Typed statement signed ("Wm. H. Taft"), as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Washington, 5 April 1924. 1 page, 8vo, small lithographed portrait of Wilson at center of page, TEN WORDS ADDED IN TAFT'S HAND.
"NO MAN IN A CENTURY WIELDED MORE POWER AND INFLUENCE"
Taft's eloquent tribute to President Wilson, "written and published," Taft notes below the type-written text, "at the time of President's Wilson's death" on 3 February 1924. Taft eulogizes his White House successor: "Woodrow Wilson in the latter years of the war and in the year following the armistice was the greatest figure on the world stage. No man in a century wielded more power and influence. He was born to command with confidence and courage, and events gave him an opportunity to lead men not given to any other in our history. He was a man of very high ideals and great force of character. He brought to his great place most exceptional faculties. He will live in the ideals he preached and sought." With Wilson's death, Taft became the only living former President.
