A RARE ALS FROM FDR'S TENURE IN THE NEW YORK STATE SENATE. Roosevelt is about to enter his second term in the State Senate here in 1912, as he welcomes a fellow Democrat to the body: "I am only just recovering from an attack of typhoid fever," he tells Wheeler, "& have not had an opportunity before this of telling you how very glad I am that you won out, & are to be in the Senate for the next two years with me. You have made a great record in your normally Republican district, and I am encouraged to think that the voters appreciate it." Wheeler had served one term in the Assembly as a representative of Hancock, in Delaware County before running successfully for the Senate. He, like Roosevelt, would serve only one more term in Albany. But while Wheeler faded into political obscurity, FDR resigned his seat in March 1913 to join the Wilson Administration as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. AUTOGRAPH LETTERS FROM ROOSEVELT'S TENURE IN ALBANY ARE COMPARATIVELY RARE. ONLY ONE OTHER IS RECORDED IN AUCTION RECORDS SINCE 1975.
