LAURA MABEL FRANCATELLI'S COPY AFFIDAVIT FROM LORD MERSEY'S TITANC ENQUIRY
typed over two and a half pages and given a more reflected account than her letter of the 20th April, ..I then noticed that the sea was nearer to us than during the day, and I said to Sir Cosmo Duff Gordon "We are sinking" and he said "Nonsense come away".. as they were letting down the last life boat on our side there was a call for "Any more women" and they pulled at Lady Duff Gordon and myself, but we again refused to go [without Sir Cosmo], so they lowered the life boat without us.. Afterwards they were allowed to disembark with Sir Cosmo in a 'small ordinary rowing boat' We were a long way off when we saw the Titanic go right up at the back and plunge down. There was an awful rumbling when she went. Then came screams and cries.. Eventually the lights of Carpathia were seen and we got on board.., secured with a pin and inscribed on the outer edge London Station Drill Hall Westminster "Titanic" Inquiry Statement of Miss Francatelli Mr Vaughan Williams A.F.R.W. Tweedie 5 Lincoln Inn Fields W C; together with a memorial postcard inscribed Lucie Duff Gordon saved from wreck by S.S. Carpathia at 6 A.M. 15 April; a copy of The Sinking of the Titanic and Great Sea Disasters, 1912, and a quantity of later ephemera regarding Titanic in the form of press clippings, copies of journals, or copy letters regarding the film A Night to Remember, signed by Miss Francatelli, later Haering
