AN EARLY 20TH-CENTURY 6½IN. RADIUS VERNIER SEXTANT BY CARY
with polished brass 'T' frame, the silvered scale divided to 160°, the arc signed and numbered Cary London 3248, engraved R.A. Cochrane R.N. on the index arm, contained within a fitted box with sighting tubes, further name plate to lid -- 10¼in. (26cm.) wide.

Lot Essay

R.A. Cochrane, later Air Chief Marshall The Hon Sir Ralph Cochrane, began his career in the Navy as a midshipman in 1912. By 1915 he was an airship pilot and he stayed with the service when it later split from the R.N. He went on to establish the New Zealand Air Force in 1937 remaining as its Chief of Staff. His speciality was precision bombing and it was under his guidence that 617 Squadron made the famous Dam Buster raids in May 1943.
