Oceanic was the first vessel to exceed the Great Eastern in length (but not tonnage). An unlucky vessel, in 1900 she was struck by lightening; 1901 she collided with and sank the Kincora in fog; 1905 saw a mutiny on board over staff conditions and in 1912 she nearly collided with the outward-bound Titanic. She made her last sailing to New York from Southampton in July 1914 and from August that year, was posted to the 10th Cruiser Squadron on the Northern Patrol only to be wrecked on September 8th in calm and clear weather 3 n. m. S.E. of Foula Island; Her worthwhile remains were salvaged in 1979.
