Lot Essay

On 22nd September 1914 U-9, commanded by Lt. Otto Weddigen, sank no fewer than three British cruisers in less than an hour; H.M.Ships Aboukir, Hogue and Cressy were lost with almost 1,400 men and brutally demonstrated for the first time the capabilities of submarine warfare, forcing a reluctant Admiralty to radically re-think its tactics.
