Lot Essay

Designed and built by Edwards Bros. of North Shields, their 'Castle' class of steam trawlers was ordered for Castle Steam Trawlers Ltd. in 1898. All identical, each vessel was registered (as an iron screw ketch) at 153 tons gross (net tonnage varied slightly) and measured 106 feet in length with a 21 foot beam. Engined by the North East Marine Company of Sunderland, the initial order was for five trawlers named Amroth Castle, Lawrenny Castle, Manorbier Castle, Pembroke Castle and Tenby Castle.
