Lot Essay

An inscription on the reverse identifies this picture as a Royal Scottish Academy exhibit of 1907. Hutchison exhibited two pictures that year: An interior: Norde Brabant [sic] and An idyll of the shore. Although it could be the former, our painting's subject seems more compatible with The mid-day meal, exhibited in 1908.

North Brabant is the largest province of the Netherlands.
