The present work, painted on one of Cadell's many trips to Iona, depicts Charles Oliver, Cadell's loyal man-servant. Oliver had served in the navy during World War II and had been employed by Cadell soon afterwards. Sharing the artist's meticulous and orderly way of life, Oliver became an invaluable assistant. He was an excellent cook, looked after the studio, showed patrons paintings and even negotiated sales when necessary.
