Lot Essay
The present work bears similarity to other paintings of the early 1920s by Hunter, in subject matter, palette and composition. Hunter was working in Fife in 1920-21, both at St Monance (see lot 169) and nearby Ceres. Hunter was attracted to the northern light and the earthy colours he found in Fife. In Ceres, Fife, he has painted the roof-tops a rich red, just as he did in Ceres Hill, Fife (Hunterian Art Gallery, Glasgow). This colouring shows an interest in an expressionistic use of paint, drawing from Van Gogh's approach to representing objects and light.
