Alastair Garden Sinclair, the present owner's great-uncle, lived in Edinburgh and was a close friend of Cadell. Along with Cadell and John Lavery he was a founding member of the Society of Eight (circa 1911) which comprised Patrick Adam, David Alison, James Cadenhead, Harrington Mann and James Paterson. With the aim of producing an annual exhibition of a higher standard than the 'general' exhibitions at the R.S.A. and R.G.I., they held an annual exhibition in a suite of rooms, 'The New Gallery', at 12 Shandwick Place.

Sinclair went on frequent painting trips to Iona with Cadell and later with Peploe. In the 1930s Peploe was the guest of Sinclair and his wife, Louie, at Calvine, Perthshire, where Peploe painted some of his most powerful landscapes with trees.
