Hunter visited the Continent, in particular southern France and the coast, throughout the 1920s. He worked extensively in St Paul de Vence, Cassis and in St Tropez. The influence of Cézanne on his work is evident, and this shared appreciation for the light and character of southern France united the artists. Hunter was also aware of the exhibitions held by Roger Fry in 1910 and 1912 showing the work of the Post-Impressionists, in which Cézanne, Gauguin and Van Gogh played a significant part. In his notebooks, there are long extracts from articles about these artists, and Hunter made notes on the colour that they used. The present lot suggests this influence, and his interpretation of it is very impressionistic; the vase and the glass to its right, for example, are depicted with very brief, suggestive brush marks, and in the light, appear to dissolve into the lavender background.
