The present lot is a fine example of Millais' work, and certainly one of his more dramatic. The tempestuous clouds contrast the white sheen of the Arab's coat, giving it a close to supernatural appearance, while its bold alertness contrasts the nervous energy of the dog, enhancing the Arab's almost heroic, timeless qualities. The impressive composition is enforced by the calculated confidence of Millais' hand, his competent brushstrokes and adept use of colour, contrast and chiaroscuro.

Possibly painted as a commission, Millais also painted Big Game and Sun Chariot for George VI, and Colonist for Winston Churchill; he also painted The Queen arriving at Ascot, 1977, now in the Royal Collection.
