Château Cheval-Blanc--Vintage 1999
Saint-Emilion, 1er grand cru classé (A)
Tasting Note: Merlot 55 and Cabernet Franc 45 Pierre Lurton gave us some interesting information, particularly about the harvest that followed a stress-free growing season for the vines. The grapes were physiologically rupe from 13 September, the Merlot being picked between 14 and 18 September. Harvesting was interrupted by heavy rain, from 19-21 September , the Cabernet Franc being picked between the 22nd and 28th. 'Very healthy grapes, the best looking since 1989'. Unusually deep, virtually opaque; low-keyed, but fragrant and oaky on nose and palate. Ripe, fleshy, dry finish. Impressive. April 2000 **** M.B.
