Isabella de Chirico was the second wife of Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978), an influential pre-Surrealist Greek-Italian painter who founded the scuola metafisica art movement. He is best known for the paintings he produced between 1909 and 1919, his metaphysical period, which are memorable for the haunted, brooding moods evoked by their images.
In 1930, de Chirico met Isabella Pakszwer, a Polish-Russian émigrée, fondly known as Isa. She encouraged de Chirico's investigations into the techniques of the Old Masters and his frequent attacks on modern art. They formally married in 1951, and remained together until his death in 1978 aged 90.
