The present work likely dates from 1895, for it was at this time that Seguin began signing his works with the monogram seen here, so cleverly placed on the sail of one of the boats. The monogram design could have been suggested by Gauguin, with whom Seguin was quite close at the time. Of the twenty or so fans made by the artist and exhibited in 1897, only four works survive, including the present example. Seguin's fine pointillist touch is in strong evidence here, as the decorative motif of waves and boats perfectly follow the curvilinear form of the fan.
