THREE 18TH CENTURY GOLD, AGATE INTAGLIO RINGS
The first an oval banded agate intaglio depicting the kneeling figure of Capaneus bearing sword and shield with thunderbolt, in later early 19th century swivel ring mount; the second an oval hardstone intaglio carved to depict the figure of Atlas kneeling bearing the globe upon his shoulders, in plain ring mount; the third a white agate oval intaglio depicting double classical head profiles facing to the right, with reeded border, bifurcated shoulders and reeded hoop (3)

Capaneus
In Greek Myth Capaneus possesed great strength and was a formidable warrior. He challenged Zeus at the walls of Thebes to stop him from invading the city, Zeus responded by sending a thunderbolt which struck and killed him
The inspiration for the composition of Atlas is probably taken from the 'Farnese Atlas' in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples. This is a 2nd century Roman marble copy of a Hellenistic sculpture and is the oldest extant statue of the Titan of Greek mythology
