BORDEAUX 1994: OVERLOOKED AND UNDERRATED
1994 began with the highest of hopes: early flowering and nearly perfect conditions in early spring had growers quietly heralding '94 as the vintage of the century. Rain clouds drowned those wishes during harvest in mid-September, yet the finest producers employed severe selection, reducing crops up to 50 in some cases, and saved the vintage for a small group of Châteaux.
This vintage has been overshadowed in the wine press by its more intially robust successors, vintages 1995 and 1996. Yet the 1994 vintage has been a secret among discerning connoisseurs who gladly ignore the rain-soaked reputation and collect these firmly strucuted and concentrated wines.
This is a wine that produced classically flavored Bordeaux, reminiscent of the elegant wines from 1970 and meant to age. The vintage can be tasted at its best in impériale form."
