GRAND-MAYNE 1955: A UNIQUE OFFERING
"The famed authority on the solids of Pomerol and St.-Emilion, Professor Enjalbert, has made it very clear in his lectures and other works that Grand-Mayne possesses one of the most privileged sites in all of St.-Emilion. The exceptionally high altitude-55 meters above sea level-and soil base, which consists primarily of clay and limestone intermixed with iron deposits, make this vineyard potential one of the best of the entire appellation. Aesthetically the magnificent vanilla ice cream0colored chateau has been totally renovated and is a striking sight to behold on a bright, blue-skied day.
This is a wine that can be exceptionally full bodied, with gobs of glycerin because of the superb vineyard soil and great exposition the vineyard enjoys.
If my enthusiasm for Grand-Maybe seems excessive, consider the fact that the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild, after tasting the 1955 Grand-Mayne at a restaurant in Belgium, immediately placed an order for several cases, offering to replace the Grand-Mayne with a similar number of bottles of the 1955 Mouton-Rothschild!" Robert Parker, Bordeaux (1985)
