But these two celebrated practitioners of design both leave us with some sense of the passion and fascination they had for architectural elements. Both Soane and Peto, although a century apart, consistently used these elements to enhance the designs of their own properties. Michael Roberts is as passionate in his acquisition and display of the unusual as those before him. He has dedicated over twenty years to collecting and dealing and following a period of travel in 2005, has changed direction of his business to focus on restoring a diverse range of buildings across Europe.

Lot Essay

John Henning the Elder (b.1771-d.1851), came to London in 1811, and was overwhelmed with admiration of the Elgin marbles, which were to become a source of great influence for him. Working for Josiah Wedgwood at the time, Henning embarked on a project of making models of the Parthenon and Phigaleian friezes. The project took twelve years to complete.
