THE SARACEN FOUNDRY Walter Macfarlane (1817-85) started the iron foundry, on Saracen Lane, Glasgow. It was taken over by his nephew, also Walter, who joined in 1871 and helped over see the move to a purpose built gothic style foundry on the Possil Estate, and took the firm into the 20th century. The firm specialised in the production of architectural features, such as drinking fountains, bandstands, lamp standards, with the emphasis on artistic function and design. Contemporary architects, such as, Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, James Sellars and John Burnet, were commissioned to produce elegant architectural forms to enhance the industrial splendour of Victorian Glasgow.
