Manufacture of these watches began in 1949, under licence with the Academy, after Academy Director, Margaret Herrick, authorised a four-year contract with Bulova. This was the first commercial licence entered into by the Academy and Bulova paid the Academy $145,000 to create an exclusive line of Academy Award watches. However, the contract with Bulova was broken off after two years of production following conflict over how the watch was advertised.
