Geordi La Forge was named for a Star Trek fan named George La Forge, a fan of The Original Series. Geordi's namesake suffered from muscular dystrophy, and was the inspiration for the blindness that afflicted Burton's character. It was hoped that Geordi La Forge's daily triumph over that handicap would make him a role model.
