The present work depicts Roamer, an elderly foxhound, who belonged to Herbert Walter Bevan, brother of the artist. The Bevan family kept two packs of harriers, and hare coursing was a favourite pastime. The four Bevan sons also rode to hounds and were members of two Hunts: the Crawley and Horsham, and the Southdown. (Fig. 1. the photograph shows Herbert Walter Bevan and Robert Polhill Bevan with their hounds). Some of the hounds were kept at Horsgate, the Bevan house, whilst others were kept at neighbouring Cuckfield Park.

Roamer, was one of Herbert Walter's favourite dogs, so much so that he was photographed (Fig. 2.). Bevan painted the dog's portrait for his brother as a memento. The only similar work of which we are aware, Hound at Attention, Exmoor [One of the Dulverton Fox Hounds], was painted in 1895-6, when Bevan was living on Exmoor.

We are very grateful to Patrick Baty for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
