Lot Essay

The trestle-supported oak table incorporates revived elements of historical design popularised in the early 19th century by the likes of Anthony Salvin and Richard Bridgens. Salvin's first major commission, between 1827-33. was for Mamhead, Devon, which he designed in 'Tudorbethan' style, while Bridgens' Furniture with Candleabra and Interior Decoration, first published in 1832, illustrated the same fretwork patterns that Salvin had used at Mamhead.
