This popular figure was also executed in bronze by the Barbedienne foundry in different sizes, the present example being one of the largest editions. Jean-Pierre Cortot created the orginial, now in the Louve, in marble and exhibited it at the 1834 Salon. Cortot (1787-1843) studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and won the Prix de Rome in 1809, he subsequently worked on several national commissions and specialised in patriotic public monuments.
