Lot Essay

The carved decoration on this table is influenced by examples from the mid-16th century, notably the work of Hugues Sambin who used fruit garlands and winged chimerae to embellish his work. His book Oeuvres de la diversité des termes, published in 1572, was influential in developing a distinctively French style of Renaissance ornament.
A closely related table was sold Christie's, London, 22nd November, 2005, lot 246.
