ROBERT BLACKALL GRAHAM

Photographic Illustrations, with description of Mandalay & Upper Burmah Expeditionary Force, 1886-1887. Birmingham: A Pumphrey, [no date but 1887]. Quarto (285 x 220mm). Printed in red and black on thin card throughout. 59 albumen photographs (each c.100 x c.137mm) with letterpress explanatory text beneath, each leaf printed recto only, photo-lithographed plan of Mandalay. (The mounts buckling.) Original red cloth (neat repairs to the spine). Provenance: G. Baker (early ownership signature in the top margin of the title) -- 'Miss Wood' (gift to) -- The Royal United Service Institution (bookplate recording the gift, and de-accession stamp, on the front endpaper).

FIRST EDITION. One of the two best visual records of the region for this period (see previous lot), and which can be seen as a continuation of Hooper's book. The albumens include 29 topographical views (the majority of Rangoon or its environs and including 8 river scenes), 14 ethnographical portraits of the Burmese, and 14 portraits of British army personnel. Of particular interest is a portrait of Prince Moung Peng 'a grandson of King Midohn Min', and a portrait of the deposed 'King Theebaw and his wives' -- the print made from a negative found in the palace by the occupying forces.
