PAUL GRAHAM

A1. The Great North Road. Bristol: Grey Editions, 1983. Oblong quarto (280 x 210mm). 40 colour photographs. Original grey bubble-grained cloth, original photo-illustrated dust-jacket. Paul Graham's signature in black ink on the title. Colour print: 190 x 240mm, unframed, signed and dated 1982 on the verso.

FIRST EDITION OF THE VERY RARE HARDCOVER ISSUE, SIGNED, WITH AN ORIGINAL SIGNED VINTAGE PRINT: 'Little Chef in Rain, St Neots, Cambridgeshire, May 1982'. The image is reproduced in the book as plate number 12. A1 is one of the decade's most important British photobooks, and early evidence of Graham's distinctive interpretation of the documentary mode. 'He has been pivotal in revitalising this area of photographic discourse, by broadening documentary photography's visual language, and, essentially, by questioning our notions of what such photography could say, be, and look like' (Museum Folkwang, unpublished catalogue for a forthcoming exhibition). Only approximately 75 copies of the hardcover were produced. Early Graham vintage prints are rare. Cf. The Photobook, vol. II, pp.55, 291 ('HE HAS CONTINUALLY PUSHED THE BOUNDARIES OF DOCUMENTARY PRACTICE').
