A reproduction lacquered-brass Italian heliocentric armillary sphere,
mid/late 20th Century
the horizon ring divided in degrees, marked out in units and numbered, the winds named in Italian GRECO, LEVANTE, SCIROCCO, MEZZOGIORNO, LIBECCIO, PONENTE, MAESTRO, TRAMONTANO, with graduated meridian ring, five parallel brass rings representing the polars, tropics and equator, the wide ecliptic band with the signs of the Zodiac and their sigils each graduated 0-30, with six concentric rings (one with Earth ball)to Sun ball in the centre, the horizon supported on four arcs with foliate decoration to baluster column and wood circular base

Lot Essay

This armillary sphere was included in the Exposition and catalogue La Mesure du temps dans les collections Belges in 1984, unfortunately it was misattributed as being Ptolemaic and seventeenth century. It is a recent copy.
