Dr Esser was one of the first collectors of work by Mondriaan, Gestel and Sluijters. He knew them very personal and invited them often to his house at the Willemsparkweg in Amsterdam. In the years between 1907-1910 Sluijters made several paintings with nudes seen from the back, in which the model raises her arm. See for a comparable position of the nude of the painting "Standing nude", now in the collection of the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp, formerly also in the collection of Dr Esser: Anita Hopmans, Jan Sluijters 1881-1957, Zwolle 1991, p. 118 (ill. 73A)
