A RARE CARVED LONGQUAN CELADON JAR AND COVER, GUAN
YUAN/EARLY MING DYNASTY, 14TH CENTURY
The globular body carved in relief with the characters Fu gui shang an, 'May you have peace and prosperity forever', alternating with melon, peach, pomegranate and loquat each within a rectangular panel above a broad border of lotus lappets, each enclosing a stiff plantain leaf, with overlapping flower petals below the rim, all supported on an unglazed footrim burnt orange in the firing, the underside of the base countersunk in the centre; the cover with a bracket lobed rim, decorated with panels containing further fruit and floral sprigs below a recumbent fu dog forming the finial, covered overall in a thick olive-green glaze
