A TIBETAN-STYLE REPOUSSE GILT-SILVER RITUAL STEMBOWL
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

Finely cast in repoussé technique with the exterior of gilt-silver, the rounded sides of the bowl decorated with a band of lotus scroll against a dense foliate ground, below a register of floral bloom under the everted mouth rim and overlapping lappets and ruyi-heads surrounding the base, the high splayed foot decorated with a rope design at the mid-section, below a band of stylised flowers, the lower section rendered in openwork with dragons striding amidst foliage, the interior of the bowl with an additional silver lining, set with at the centre with single floral bloom, the petals inlaid with turquoise and further embellished with silver beads

The present stembowl was probably used as a lamp for the Buddhist altar, similar to those known as 'butter lamps' included in the exhibition, Monarchy and its Buddhist Way, Tibetan-Buddhist Ritual Implements in the National Palace Museum, 1994, illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 102 (blue and white stemcup), nos. 103-104 (in cloisonne enamel).
