A WHITE JADE 'PEONY' BALUSTER VASE AND COVER
QING DYNASTY, LATE 19TH CENTURY

The vase of flattened baluster form, one side carved in high relief with a quail on a reticulated rockwork platform, below its companion perched on the branch of a flowering tree peony, growing along the exterior of the vase, the lower body of the vase finely carved in shallow relief to represent a brocade cloth tied into a bow on one side, applied on the waisted neck with a pair of mythical dragon-head handles, each suspending a loose circular ring, the stepped cover surmounted by a domed finial, the semi-translucent material of even white tone with areas of caramel inclusions worked into the overall design
