Lot Essay
Lothar Rübelt (1901-1991) was born in Vienna. He was an accomplished athlete in several sports and an Olympic relay race champion in 1920. He photographed sport events, most famously with the Leica, and with his brother founded a family enterprise specialising in sports photography. His work was published extensively and he photographed the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He worked as a war correspondent from 1938 in the Sudetenland and from 1939 in Poland. After the war he returned to sport photography, especially of winter sports. See also lot 211.
