The Grecian-scrolled dressing-table stool, caned for a French squab-cushion, was popularised by a pattern in Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807 (pl.12, fig 3). Similar stools were manufactured in the early 19th century by Messrs Gillow of London and Lancaster (see N. Goodison and J. Hardy, Gillows at Tatton Park, Furniture History, 1970, pl.22). A related japanned stool is included in this sale (lot 34).
