Almost certainly the chairs recorded on 26 December 1823 as 'Dining Room Chairs Morocco Seats = £2.10.0. Estimate of Furniture for Sir D. H. Blair Bart, By M. Morison & Son, Ayr. 'I will engage to supply you with furniture of the description given on the other side, at the prices there with annexed. Manufactured from the first rate materials thoroughly seasoned & finished in the neatest and best possible manner, and agreeable in shape size & pattern to those you have got from London' (Blairquhan Archive).
The leather-seated chairs, with arm raised from urn-capped columnar legs, reflect the French antique fashioned 'Parlour' chair popularised by Thomas Sheraton's, Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterers Drawing Book, 1791-94 (pl.33). However the chairs' Grecian tablet-rails and Pan reed enrichments reflect the more robust architecture introduced in the early 19th century by publications such as George Smith's, Collection of Designs for Household Furniture, 1808.
The distinctive Scottish 'honey-pot' baluster turning at the base of the arms is characteristic of Morison's work at Blairquhan and is shared on the side cabinet (lot 31) and dining table (lot 52).
