The case, for the clock by the Strand clock-maker James Jenkins, is mosaiced with flowered medallions in the Louis Quatorze 'Roman' fashion. It is likely to have been commissioned by Daniel Finch, 2nd Earl of Nottingham and 7th Earl of Winchilsea (d.1730), and may be that featured in the hall at Burley-on-the Hill, Rutland in the 1920s (C. Hussey, 'Burley-on-the-Hill' II, Country Life, 17th February, 1923, p. 215, fig. 8). Similar marquetry features on a clock-case attributed to the late 17th century Edinburgh cabinet-makers Robert and Thomas Moubray (F. Bamford, A Dictionary of Edinburgh Furniture Makers, Leeds, 1983, p.90 and pl. 1).
