Such tall parlour chairs, with serpentined vase-fretted splats, were known as having 'India' backs in the early 18th century. These chair-backs, with their Venus dolphin-scale imbrication, relate to that of a Netherlandish chair in the Rijksmuseum (R. Baarsen, Nederlandse Meublen 1600-1800, Amsterdam , 1993, no.38).
