The portable writing-box, with its mosaiced chequer parquetry, relates to the work of the 'sadeli' manufacturers of Bombay, of which Atmaram Wulleram was recorded as being amongst the longest-established in the 1860s (G.C.M. Birdwood, The Inlaid Work of Bombay, Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, Bombay chapter, vol. VII, 1861-3 p.X1X; and A. Jaffer, Furniture from British India and Ceylon, London, 2001, no. 130).
