Lot Essay

The present figure of Voltaire is almost certainly the same figure that appears as lot 828 in C.B King's auction catalogue of the contents of Kenwood Mansion, 6-9th November, 1922. The lot is described in the catalogue as 'Very fine 13 in. Bronze Figure 'Voltaire', on marble and bronze base (illustration facing page 28)'. The present figure of Rousseau is almost certainly lot 829 in the same catalogue, described as '12 in. similar figure'. This figure can be seen illustrated on the bureau plat (lot 923) on page 25 of the 1922 catalogue. It is assumed that the 1922 measurements do not include the measurements of the bases.
