Lot Essay

William Atkinson's original hand-drawn design for a 'Sofa for Gallery Scone, July 1821' with identical arm-terminal carving is held in the Scone Palace Family Achive.

The fireside bergere chairs, whose Grecian-cippus arms are fretted with crocket-gables and cusp-arched niches, reflect the robust baronial antique gothic fashion adopted by the architect William Atkinson (d.1839) following his training in the offices of James Wyatt (d.1813). A related bergere pattern featured in R. Ackermann's, Repository of Arts, 1828.
