Lot Essay
The present tazza is similar but smaller than the example illustrated on the George Bullock table in the centre of J.Gibb's painting of the Long Gallery at Scone Palace circa 1827.
Such splendid tazzae, richly sculpted with bacchic lion and satyr masks, were popularised by the discovery of the related Pompeian altar basin for lustral water and its display in the Museum in Naples. Enthusiasm for such antiquities was further promoted by publications such as Thomas Hope's, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807; and Henry Moses, Collection of Antique Vases, Altars, Paterae, Tripods, Candelabra, Sarcophagi etc., 1814. The Scone tazza is likely to have been prized as a restored antiquity in the early 19th century.
